Spray-On Concrete Specialists on the NSW

Most tired driveways on the South Coast don’t need a full rip-out. They need the right coating on a concrete slab that’s still sound.

That’s where spray-on concrete comes in. Done well, it covers surface cracks, improves grip, and lifts the look of the place. You avoid the cost and mess of a new pour.

The hard part is choosing who does the work. Not every “driveway paint” job is a proper spraycrete system. Prep standards differ. Products differ. So does how long the finish lasts under coastal sun, tyre heat, and salt air.

Here’s a clear side-by-side look at five specialists across the Illawarra and NSW South Coast. Use it to shortlist. Still get a site inspection before you book. For more home upgrade ideas, browse the Home & Gardening section on Ucdarnet.

What spray-on concrete involves

Spray-on concrete (also called spraycrete or spray pave) is a cement-based polymer coating applied over existing concrete.

The usual steps are:

  • High-pressure clean and crack repair
  • Bonding base coat
  • Colour and texture (sometimes with stencils)
  • Two coats of clear sealer

Rush the prep and the coating won’t stick. Skimp on sealer and UV or tyre marks show up within a couple of seasons. Compare process, not just colour charts.

Outdoor surfaces are one of the upgrades that most improve day-to-day use of a property. See also top outdoor features that increase home livability.

How this comparison was built

I checked public service lists, coverage areas, and what each business treats as core work. No fake case studies. No invented prices.

Quotes still need a site visit. Slab condition, access, and old coatings change the job.

All five work outdoor residential surfaces in or around the Illawarra. Some also do epoxy, sealing, or commercial work.

1. Illawarra Stone Surfacing

Based in Wollongong, with work across Shellharbour, Kiama, Nowra and further along the coast. Spraycrete is a core outdoor service here, not a side add-on.

Their process follows the standard sequence: pressure clean, base coat, optional stencil work, spray, then dual clear seal. They also offer exposed aggregate and resin-bound stone. That’s useful if you’re weighing a coating against a different surface type.

They cover driveways, pool surrounds, patios, pathways and courtyards. Pool areas need a cooler, grippy finish. Spraycrete suits that better than smooth acrylic paint when it’s specified and sealed properly.

Illawarra Stone Surfacing has 20+ years in concreting and licensed applicators. Coverage reaches parts of the Southern Highlands and the south Sydney fringe.

Best fit: Decorative spray finishes with stencil options, plus a contractor who also knows other outdoor surfaces.

2. Illawarra Resurfacing

From the Balgownie side of the Illawarra. Focus areas include decorative concrete, driveway resurfacing, spray-on paving, epoxy floors, waterproofing and surface prep.

That mix helps if the job isn’t only outdoor. Many homes need a driveway refresh and a garage floor upgrade together. One team for both is simpler.

They offer free quotes and colour samples, and list 20+ years in resurfacing. Coverage includes Shellharbour, Austinmer, Kiama, Thirroul, Balgownie, wider Wollongong, and South Coast work.

Their driveway message is plain: textured, non-slip, easier to clean. That matches coastal driveways that cop rain and tyre traffic.

Best fit: Jobs that may need outdoor spray-on work plus epoxy or waterproofing.

3. Sunset Coatings

Works across Wollongong, the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and south Sydney. Decorative coatings and spray paving sit at the centre of the offer, with driveway and flooring services as well.

The pitch is simple: restore worn or uneven concrete without jumping straight to replacement. They take residential and commercial work and say job size isn’t a barrier.

That spread matters between Wollongong and the Shoalhaven. You’re less likely to get a “too far south” knock-back around Nowra. Still confirm travel fees and minimum job size when you call.

Best fit: Homes between the Illawarra and Shoalhaven that want a dedicated decorative coatings team with spray paving skills.

4. Superior Coating

Covers Helensburgh through to Nowra. Strong on driveway sealing, painting, cleaning and restoration. Also lists spraycrete and resurfacing for tired, cracked or stained concrete.

Product detail is clearer here than on many sites. They reference systems such as NuTech PaveCoat and Shield Coast Concreshield. Aftercare guidance is practical too: often about 48 hours before foot traffic and around seven days before vehicles, depending on the system.

They state a one-year warranty on workmanship and adhesion, with the usual exclusions for external damage and poor upkeep. Ask every contractor the same warranty questions so quotes line up.

When you’re comparing coating products and service packages, the Products & Services archive is a useful place to scan related buyer guides.

Best fit: Driveway jobs where sealing, colour coating and full textured spraycrete are all on the table.

5. Apex Custom Coatings

An Illawarra cleaning and coating specialist with 15+ years locally. Offers textured concrete resurfacing plus cleaning and coating work.

Cleaning matters more than people expect. Moss, tyre film, old sealer and laitance all affect bond. Teams that prep properly usually get fewer call-backs.

A solid pick if you want a local coatings specialist, not a general concreter doing spray work on the side.

Best fit: Illawarra properties that need a thorough clean-and-coat or textured resurfacing on an existing slab.

What to compare before you book

Colour charts look similar across most systems. The real differences sit in the quote.

Ask these questions:

  • How will they treat cracks and movement joints?
  • Is it cementitious spraycrete or acrylic driveway paint? (Not the same thing.)
  • What sealer, and how many coats?
  • What are the cure times in writing?
  • Who will be on site, and are they licensed?

Coastal UV is hard on thin sealers. Hot tyres mark dark colours in summer. A driveway that can’t take cars for a week needs planning if you’ve only got one crossover.

Price reality on the South Coast

Spray-on work usually costs less than demolition and a new slab. Final price depends on repairs, square metres, access, and whether you want plain colour or full stencil work.

Watch cheap square-metre rates that skip prep. Pressure cleaning, crack repair, masking, base coat and dual seal should show up in the scope. If they don’t, you’ll pay later or get a shorter service life.

Most solid operators still want a site visit. Moisture, old coatings and soft edges only show up in person.

Choosing the right specialist

Match the contractor to the surface.

  • Pool surrounds and sloping driveways need texture and grip
  • Front paths may need stencil detail
  • Garages often suit epoxy better than outdoor spraycrete

Some of the businesses above handle all of that. Others stay narrower.

If the slab is badly heaved, root-damaged, or failing underneath, coating won’t fix it. A good applicator will say so and walk away. That’s a good sign.

A fresh outdoor surface also pairs well with other simple updates. If you’re modernising more than the driveway, read 5 design features that instantly modernize any home.

For most South Coast homes with sound but tired concrete, a proper spray-on system is still one of the smarter upgrades. Shortlist two or three specialists. Get like-for-like scopes. Judge them on prep, products, warranty and local track record.

The finish you walk on in five years is decided in those details, not on the sample board alone.
