FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brisbane, 2 October 2024 — Daniel Lewis, a security officer, never expected that a routine patrol would lead to a life-saving moment. Recently, Daniel found himself in a critical situation that tested his training and instincts when he saved the life of an unconscious woman by performing CPR.

While on patrol, Daniel noticed a woman on the ground, with a fellow security guard attempting CPR incorrectly. His recent training gave him the confidence to step in, take control, and apply chest compressions with precision, until paramedics arrived and stabilised the woman.

A Life Saved Through Calm and Training

“She wasn’t breathing, her skin was pale—I knew she needed immediate help,” Daniel recalls. Remaining calm, he communicated with the woman and those assisting, reassuring everyone involved until professional help arrived.

Paramedics instructed Daniel to continue his life-saving efforts until they took over, eventually stabilising the woman and allowing him to return to his patrol.

Despite the relief of saving a life, Daniel felt overwhelmed by the praise, admitting he struggled with imposter syndrome. “People called me a hero, but I felt like anyone would’ve done the same,” he says. Through conversations with colleagues, he learned the importance of emotional debriefing after such traumatic events, especially for men who often face societal pressure to suppress emotions.

Emphasising the Importance of CPR Training

Daniel credits his recent CPR and Advanced First Aid training, completed as part of his Cert III in Close Protection Operations at Asset College, for preparing him to handle the emergency. He urges others to stay up to date with their training, saying, “The training was so fresh in my mind, it made all the difference.”

For those hesitant about learning CPR, Daniel emphasises that regular training is crucial. “You never know when a situation like this might happen, and being prepared could save a life,” he says, encouraging individuals to refresh their first aid every three years and CPR annually.

A Personal Mission to Protect Human Life

For Daniel, saving the woman’s life was more than just an act of heroism; it was a reaffirmation of his role in the security industry. “The most important commodity on this planet is the life of a human,” he states. “To be entrusted with keeping people safe and trained to respond when things go wrong is something I am very proud of.”

Daniel hopes that sharing his story will inspire others to become CPR-certified. “If my experience helps even one person decide to get trained, then it’s worth telling,” he concludes.
